About the Den
Because of the importance of Lord Rutherford as a great New Zealander and his stature internationally in the field of science, it’s essential that the few remaining sites where he lived and worked are preserved. Since 1999, Rutherford’s Den Charitable Trust Board has been building partnerships and raising funds to ensure that this happens.
Vision: That Rutherford’s Den be valued, interpreted, enjoyed and conserved.
Mission: To promote and present Lord Rutherford’s life and work, with a focus on his Canterbury days, through innovative experiences within a new visitor centre.
- Goals:
- To inspire the Rutherfords of the future with this exceptional story of an ordinary Kiwi who, from humble beginnings, went on to achieve great things.
- To celebrate and commemorate the achievements of a famous and influential New Zealander.
- To conserve and enhance the actual space that Rutherford used as a student researcher and ensure that it remains intact for future generations.
- To help visitors understand the educational and social conditions Rutherford experienced as a student in Christchurch.
- To provide visitors with information and hands-on experiences that bring to life stories about Rutherford and the development of technology.
- To use state of the art technology to tell the Rutherford story and to inspire and entertain visitors.
